How to Measure Sustainable Housing: A Proposal for an Indicator-Based Assessment Tool

Housing drives urban development and has a significant potential for contributing to sustainability. However, ample sustainability indicator sets fail include relevant indicators of sustainable housing—assessment seems be an underdeveloped topic. We chose the United Nations Geneva Charter on Sustainable as conceptual foundation proposed assessment tool. It addresses recent challenges by four defining principles related rationales, thus forming theoretical basis housing. applied both research (desk-top analysis) qualitative (an expert panel) develop comprehensive framework housing complemented it with indicators. The tool (HSAT) explicitly advocates holistic approach that seeks balance environmental, social, economic institutional dimensions sustainability; simultaneously, includes integrated concept building–community–locality. Hence, this article does not seek redefine definition or but contribute highly indicator-based system its assessment. This will ensure correct unambiguous messages are sent only policymakers also investors, planners finally citizens—the clients.
